How Does a Lab-Grown Diamond Tester Work?
What testers actually measure
Handheld testers measure thermal and electrical properties to distinguish diamond from simulants such as cubic zirconia or moissanite. They are useful screening tools—not a replacement for a full grading report from an independent lab. They cannot read color, clarity, cut quality, or origin.
Why a memorial diamond still needs a written certificate
Memorial diamonds grown from personal carbon are real diamonds. A pocket tester that confirms “diamond” does not replace documentation of cut, color, clarity, carat, and origin. Your certificate should name the independent grading lab (such as IGI or GIA) and the cutting entity—pair any pocket reading with that paperwork.
